Use and Application
Grating is a safe, durable, and functional product for all kinds of environment and industries. Gratings are typically used in platforms, mezzanines, floorings, walkways, and trenches, working as cover, filter, partition, decking, or stair tread.
Steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and FRP are the four common materials used in grating production which individually offers distinct features and advantages specially when properly designed and utilized.
Types of Gratings
Steel Gratings
ESC steel grating is manufactured in different combinations of load bar depth and thickness; load bar and cross rod pitch. The grating is manufactured from AS3679 – Grade 250 Mild Steel or equivalent making them ideal for heavy-duty applications. ESC steel gratings are available in various configurations, including welded, press-locked, and swage-locked options, ensuring the right fit for your project.
Key Features:
-
High load-bearing capacity
-
Excellent durability and resistance to impact
-
Enhanced corrosion resistance by hot-dip galvanizing or powder-coating
-
Anti-slip features such as abrasive nosing
-
Welded or bolted fixing
Aluminum Gratings
Aluminum gratings offer a lightweight yet strong alternative to steel, making them perfect for applications where weight is a critical factor. Because of their excellent corrosion resistance and quality appearance, they are also recommended for marine environments and architectural projects. ESC aluminum gratings are available in various profiles, including I-bar and rectangular bar, designed to provide a high strength-to-weight ratio using 6063-T6 aluminum or equivalent.
Key Features:
-
Can be serrated to improve slip resistance in accordance to AS 1657-2013
-
Easier transportation, handling, and installation due to light weight
-
Does not rust
-
High weight-to-strength ratio
-
Pleasing, sleek, and modern look
-
Anti-slip abrasive nosing
Stainless Steel Gratings
For applications requiring exceptional corrosion resistance, aesthetic appeal, and abrasion-resistant surface, stainless steel gratings are the ideal choice. ESC stainless steel gratings are widely used in food processing plants, chemical plants, water treatment facilities, and high-end architectural projects. Available in various grades, including 302, 304, and 316, these gratings provide long-term durability even in the most challenging environments.
Stainless Steel gratings are usually custom-manufactured to project specifications. The standard panel sizes are generally the same as steel grating panels, depending on profile.
Key Features:
-
Excellent resistance to corrosion, chemicals, and temperatures
-
Hygienic and easy to clean, making them suitable for food processing
-
High aesthetic value with a polished finish
-
Robust and long-lasting performance as a result of combined steel and aluminum properties
-
Anti-slip abrasive nosing
FRP Gratings
Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) gratings offer a non-conductive, lightweight, and corrosion-resistant alternative to metal gratings. ESC FRP gratings are ideal for industries where electrical insulation and corrosion resistance are paramount, such as in electrical substations, offshore platforms, and chemical plants.
Available in molded and pultruded forms, FRP grating is a one-piece plastic grating product available in standard and customized panels ready for installation. The square grid pattern and one-piece construction allows load to be transferred to the adjoining bars providing a superior load-carrying capacity. The load transfer assists in load distribution on the grating as well as on the support structure.
Key Features:
-
Non-conductive and corrosion-resistant
-
Lightweight and easy to handle
-
Fire retardant options available
-
Customizable to specific shapes and sizes
Accessories
-
Handrail and stanchion systems including gates, kick plates, and safety rails for disables
-
Embedded angle, plate & banding, tread nosing
-
Anchors and fasteners such as bolts & nuts, screws, rivets, and clips
-
Web plates or web mesh
Important Points
-
Metal gratings are available in several assembly forms including welded, press-locked, and swage-locked options. Surfaces of top bars or bearing bars can be smooth or serrated.
-
Skid or slip can be minimized in steel grating floors by arranging the panels in a manner that the load bars or cross bars are parallel to traffic direction or the bearing bars being perpendicular to direction of traffic.
-
Gratings are also designed for ventilation and drainage. The open-mesh design allows air and liquids to pass through, preventing water accumulation and promoting air circulation.
Besides grating products, ESC is also a provider of other types of access covers for drainage networks. Our range of cast-iron access hole covers are designed to International Standards with proven performance. ESC access hole covers are available in common or custom shapes, sizes, and load ratings with options for vehicle safety, water-tightness, or identification markings.
